Sixteen years ago, when my first child was born, doing birth photography and Fresh 48 Sessions were not a thing. Through the years they've become more and more common, and I wish I had done them for all three of my kiddos. Babies change SO MUCH in the first 72 hours of birth, and that change happens so quickly that it's easy to forget those tiny details, like the wrinkle in the baby's ear or the misshapen head. While these details are little, they are fleeting, and what better way to preserve them in time than with a Fresh 48 Session. Every single mom that I've ever known has NEVER regretted having this session done, and those that didn't more often do regret it. I get asked a lot, why have the Fresh 48 Session AND a newborn session? The answer is this...
Here you are meeting your sweet baby for the very first time after feeling them kick, move, and grow inside of you. It seems like a whirlwind once active labor starts. And before you know it, he or she is in your arms, and hormones take over. The time in the hospital is a lot like being inside of a bubble for two days. The outside world is still chugging along at it's normal pace, while you have just given birth to another human that will forever change your life. At first, it's pure exhilaration and relief once you hear your baby cry for the first time and the nurse places them in your arms. It's in the midst of this overwhelming moment that you will take in the sweet smell of your new baby, his ten fingers and ten toes, his perfect little nose, mouth and ears. Then you start trying to wrap your brain around the fact that this is YOUR little one, and you get to take this child home, and the hormonal emotions ensue. It's in the midst of this new mom fog, that the memories of these tiny details begin to fade and are replaced with new details that will be ever changing over the days to come.
Fresh 48 Sessions are designed to capture all of the details of the first 48 hours. Not only do you capture the fingers, toes, nose, mouth, and all the other sweet little details, but also the firsts. The first time big brother or sister meet your new addition for the first time, and family members that are also meeting the new addition. Its a gentle time. A peaceful time, and one worth capturing. The most recent shoot I did was with the Sellers Family. This little guys was tiny, but so so sweet. He didn't like the cold, and was most happy being held. Big brother was playing peek-a-boo with his new little brother, and has become one of my favorite captures up until now. I feel honored and privileged to be invited into such a sacred space, and capture such a momentous occasion. Congratulations to the Sellers for their new addition. I can't wait for his newborn session!
