Newborn Photography Tips

With the photography market becoming more saturated with new photographers, it's important to understand the difference when it comes to someone that is specialized in Newborn Photography.

Newborn photography requires special attention to safety to ensure the well-being of the baby. If a photographer isn't careful, he or she can cause serious harm to the baby.  Here are some important tips for ensuring baby safety during newborn photography sessions:

  1. Choose a Skilled Photographer: Ensure that the photographer you choose specializes in newborn photography and has experience working with infants. They should understand the unique challenges and safety considerations involved. Ask if they are certified in Newborn Photography Baby Safety.

  2. Temperature Control: Keep the shooting area warm to ensure the baby's comfort. Newborns are not able to regulate their body temperature well, so it's crucial to maintain a warm environment. An experienced Newborn Photographer will know the temperature and humidity level that is needed for a session.

  3. Use a Spotter: Always have an extra set of hands during the shoot. A spotter can assist in holding the baby safely, supporting the baby's head and body when necessary.

  4. Posing: Avoid putting the baby in poses that could compromise their safety. Certain advanced poses should only be attempted by experienced photographers. Always prioritize the baby's comfort and well-being over getting a specific shot.

  5. Props and Accessories: If using props or accessories, ensure they are safe and appropriate for a newborn. Avoid anything that could potentially harm the baby or cause discomfort.

  6. Clean and Sterile Environment: Keep the shooting area clean and sterile. This includes regularly washing hands, using clean blankets, and sanitizing props. Minimize the risk of infection by maintaining a hygienic environment.

  7. Adequate Support: When placing the baby on props or in certain positions, use proper support to ensure the baby is secure. Soft pillows, cushions, or specially designed supports can be used to provide stability.

  8. Natural Light or Soft Lighting: Choose soft, natural lighting for newborn photography. Harsh lights can be uncomfortable for the baby and may interfere with their sleep.

  9. Be Patient: Newborns have their own schedules and may need breaks for feeding, changing, or just comforting. Be patient and take breaks as needed.

  10. Parental Involvement: Encourage parents to be actively involved in the session, especially when handling their baby. This helps in creating a comfortable and secure environment for the newborn.

  11. Communicate with Parents: Discuss the shoot plan, poses, and any concerns with the parents beforehand. Understanding their preferences and addressing any worries they may have can contribute to a smoother and safer session.

Remember, the safety and well-being of the newborn should always be the top priority during a photography session. If a pose or setup feels risky or uncomfortable, it's essential to abandon it for the sake of the baby's safety. Communication between the photographer and parents is key to ensuring a positive and safe experience for everyone involved.
